Principal Engineer - Simulation

, Permanent

Description:

PRINCIPAL ENGINEER - SIMULATION

Odqa Renewable Energy Technologies is a fast-growing venture capital-backed renewable energy engineering spin out from the University of Oxford's Thermofluids Institute and Said Business School.  The company was founded in late 2017 to commercialise Oxford’s jet engine cooling knowledgebase in the renewable energy field.

Odqa is a team of world-class engineers and researchers, working on some of the most innovative developments in the renewable energy industry.  We offer a collaborative and inclusive work environment, where every team member can thrive and contribute to our success with opportunities to develop your skills across a broad range of disciplines.

THE ROLE:

Odqa is now at a very exciting stage and looking to take the next step in its evolution. We are growing and have a fantastic opportunity for a Principal Engineer - Simulation to join our team.  This role will report directly into our Head of Engineering and you will be responsible for leading key development programmes in relation to our concentrated solar power technology and be at the forefront of the development and delivery of simulation models.

For this position we would love it if:

  • You are self-motivated, enthusiastic with a highly creative outlook.
  • You are able to rigorously apply first order engineering and physical principles to design. This is a fundamental requirement of the role.
  • You are confident and accurate in creating transient 1D and 3D aerothermal simulations and in designing realistic experiments to validate and improve them, so that your extrapolations have a high success rate.
  • You understand the consequences of the high thermal loads on component stresses and durability, as reported to you by a specialist. Harnessing concentrated solar power will test not only your understanding of heat transfer, but also the limits of hardware design.
  • You can produce actionable, value-adding insights from the confluence of multi-disciplinary analysis. Insights could be as big as the next patent or as small as a detail improvement to the limiting component in an existing design.
  • You are flexible and adaptable to change with a positive mindset, in a fast-paced, fast growing organisation.
  • You have a proven experience in delivering projects from concept through to prototype build and test.
  • You are a highly motivated to work in the renewables section and can demonstrate practical aptitude.
  • You are a team player, who works well within a close-knit team of diverse backgrounds and experience, who can work equally as well individually.
  • You have a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

If the above sounds like YOU this could be the opportunity that you have been looking for.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the simulation model generation from concept modelling to fully detailed mimic of the programme/system that meets the design scope, operating principles, performance metrics, safety, quality, delivery, cost, people, and environment objectives.
  • Lead the system optimisation, cost avoidance, capture best practises and share conclusions with relevant stakeholders.
  • Work effectively with design teams to develop and optimise solutions considering multi-attributes within defined deadlines and time constraints.
  • Guide the process using a product knowledge and awareness of potential design constraints to ensure due consideration is given in developing solutions.
  • Coordinate and lead projects and teams and feedback results as required through design / project reviews.
  • Lead optimisation of the model against different model derivative mixes and operational parameters.
  • Lead the bottleneck analysis of the system and develop strategies to remove .
  • Support the continual development of tools and techniques which enhance capability, improve quality and robustness of simulation models .
  • Project planning and daily management of an engineering project team.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience of working within a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge and experience of concept and detailed mechanical design or aerothermal systems which include the ability to develop low order models in respect of the core mechanical engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrable experience and background in production process flow simulation, problem solving on complex technical systems
  • Demonstrable previous experience of bottleneck analysis using Discrete Event Simulation.
  • Proven project management skills
  • Understanding and Application of Lean Tools and Techniques
  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail with good judgement.
  • Ability to adapt and manage multiple tasks and priorities, whilst remaining calm and productive under pressure.
  • A team player, who works just as well within a close-knit team of diverse backgrounds and experience as they do individually on the outcomes they own.
