Job Application Tips
Advice from WES members on applying for technical jobs for the HE STEM funded Set to Lead project led from UCL Engineering.
Tip 1: Take your time
- Start early! Don’t leave it until your course ends
- Select and research potential employers carefully. This takes a lot of effort, but it will show through in your application if you demonstrate that you care about what they do.
Checklist: Do I like the look of the company?
Do I admire their work?
Is this somewhere I want to work?
- Spend a lot of time perfecting 2 or 3 really good applications rather than sending out 6 poor ones. (The first few might take a week !)
- Don’t 'copy and paste'. Every company will have a slightly different application form and process. You need to think about how your strengths and experience apply to each individual company.
Tip 2: Know what you want
- Don’t be afraid of sticking to your goals!
“If that’s what you want to do, that’s what drives you, you’ll be passionate about your job and it will come across – and you’ll enjoy your job every day.”
- If you’re not 100% happy with a job offer, see if something better comes along, but don’t hang around too long. There are lots of ways of moving around within companies – once you’ve got your foot in the door and you’ve got yourself settled and gained a bit of experience you can move around.
Tip 3: Don’t underestimate the power of a well thought out, concise, accurate job application!
- It makes a huge difference – it means that you go into an interview holding a good hand!
- You‘ve told the interviewers great stuff about yourself and already given them lots to talk about.
